Google has developed the way it serves the results in response to search queries.
The update is designed to find out if a person wants results up to date or historical data.
The U.S. firm estimated that alterations to the main algorithm would make a difference of about 35% of searches.
The changes seek to make more relevant results and enhance the features that Google thinks it apart from its rivals.
By contrast, the Microsoft search engine Bing emphasizes social search.

"Results of the search, as well as the cookies are slightly warm oven or fresh fruit on a hot summer day, are best when fresh," wrote Google co Amit Singhal in a blogpost explaining the changes.
Changes in the hood trying to understand if a researcher wants results "last week, days or even minutes," said Singhal.
The update is supposed to provide a better idea of how "fresh" the results should be.
For example, Mr. Singhal said, anyone looking for information about "Occupy Oakland protests," you probably want to breaking news.
These should be distinguished from searches of regular events, such as sports scores or reports of the company.
Other types of searches could resort to greater results, he said. Those looking for a recipe for making tomato sauce for pasta quickly would be happy with a page that has a few months or years.
The update to improve the "freshness" of the results is based on the major upgrade in the infrastructure underlying core system of indexing Google in August 2010 known as caffeine. That change made it easier for Google to keep its index up to date and to add new sources of information.
Write on the news search site Land, Danny Sullivan analyst described the changes as "huge." The last major update to the Google algorithm, known as Panda, affected only 12% of searches.
The update may have potential drawbacks, said Mr. Sullivan.
"Freshness introduces potentially rewarding great importance decreases, new ways to send spam or get the" light "in the content," said Sullivan.
